Well, you don't really have to, of course. You probably do not have one right now!
But several reasons come to mind:
- The totally technical reason for impedance matching or buffering is that in order for a signal to transfer from one medium to another (or your steel to your amp) the impedance should ideally be the same on each device, or infinite on the receiving device. It all boils down to transmission theory. Unfortunately, the reality is that you cannot get infinite impedance in the real world. So we make up for it by putting in a KickinSteel preamp.
- Control. With the real tone control and final stage gain (on select models), the sound of your steel can be modified or controlled to whatever you feel is necessary for the basement or for the gig. By the way, the reason we did not include an actual volume control is that you have at least one if not two volume controls already. Your pedal and the control on your guitar. Why add a third? This gain control allows you to fine tune the output based on your pickup.
- Sound enhancement. By tweaking the sound envelope, the signal is amplified to achieve a more punchier, "kickin" sound. Lows are great; highs are perfect.
- Totally electronic. No transformers in the guitar's signal path.
- We use a 9V battery for power. No wall-warts or cord to contend with.
